CLARA TAUSON VS SOFIA KENIN PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating first encounter between former number four Sofia Kenin 21-year-old Clara Tauson, with Kenin something of a blueprint for her opponent’s career so far.
Current world number 56 Kenin was a hugely talented rising star during her late teens, culminating in winning her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2020 before finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek here later that year – at the other side of the damaging suspension of the tour during covid-19.
The American has struggled wildly with her form practically ever since the final here in Paris, with brief patches of brilliance proof that she has plenty of time to return to the top, but it has been a similar story for Tauson in miniature over the past few years.
The 21-year-old reached three titles in 2021, winning two of them in Lyon and Luxembourg, to look very much a rising star alongside contemporaries Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez but injuries and subsequent form issues have hampered that progress.
A brilliant three-set victory over ninth seed 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko, whom she beat to her second title in Luxembourg, on Thursday will boost confidence but she will face a tougher prospect in a hungry Kenin here. Back Kenin to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors with designs on the top 30 sooner rather than later.
