THE PREDICTION

This could be a fascinating first tour-level encounter between world number four Elena Rybakina and number 91 Clara Tauson, who set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd this time two years ago. 21-year-old Tauson looked on a steady path towards the top of the sport after a brilliant breakthrough season saw her win two WTA titles in 2021, putting her in the same conversation as contemporaries Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez, but injuries have set her back significantly since. The Dane overcame Caroline Dolehide in three sets on Tuesday to build on a solid qualifying campaign but this looks too steep of a challenge against last season’s runner-up Rybakina, who was just one win away from completing the Sunshine Double after winning Indian Wells 12 months ago.

24-year-old Rybakina was forced to withdraw from Indian Wells this time around citing injury, which also saw her withdraw from the quarter-finals of the Dubai Masters last month, but despite her chances of a deep run being somewhat up in the air right now she should have plenty enough to avoid an upset here. Back the fourth seed to win in straight sets.

TIP: ELENA RYBAKINA TO WIN 2-0
