World number 79 Claire Liu beat Beatriz Haddad-Maia in straight sets in the first round of the Silicon Valley Classic but she has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since reaching a maiden WTA final at the Morocco Open back in May. The 22-year-old faces a tough prospect in world number 19 Veronika Kudermetova, who has so far enjoyed the best form of her career this season. The 25-year-old played her first match in over a month, in large part due to the Russian/Belarussian ban at Wimbledon, beating Camila Giorgi in three tight sets on Tuesday. Kudermetova beat Liu in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open at the start of the season and whilst this could come a little closer, with Liu playing on home soil, there is little to suggest an upset here. Back Kudermetova to win outright for a suitably cautious move given her lack of recent matches.
