THE LOWDOWN

CHRISTOPHER EUBANKS

27-year-old Christopher Eubanks will break the top 40 on tour for the first time after taking his opportunity with both hands in a straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell on Saturday, backing-up his career-best win over Cam Norrie in the second round. The American enjoyed his first deep run on tour at the Miami Open in March, reaching the quarter-finals before defeat to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev, and he claimed his maiden ATP title at the Mallorca Championships last week to make it now eight wins on the spin on grass.

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas claimed his best result at Wimbledon over two days with a five-set victory over two-time former champion Andy Murray and he backed it up well on Saturday, ousting Laslo Djere in straight sets. The 24-year-old has emulated his best run to round of 16 here from 2018 but he has some ways to go to match his best Grand Slam runs after twice finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros in 2021 and at the Australian Open earlier thus year. Tsitsipas has played six days in a row at Wimbledon due to rain delays and his Men’s Doubles commitments with brother Petros but the pair lost on Sunday to at least offer him more focus on his singles chances.

THE PREDICTION

This is the biggest day of Christopher Eubanks’ career by several leagues and the American has the game on grass to cause a genuine upset here. World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas is the clear favourite on experience and ability but five days’ play in a row must surely take some toll on his body the longer this match goes on and Eubanks’ 72 aces so far this campaign suggest breaks of serve will be at a premium for both big-servers. Eubanks saw off Christopher O’Connell via three tiebreaks on Saturday and Tsitsipas has seen seven tiebreaks already this campaign to offer a suitable combination in lieu of backing an outright winner as it is important to remember that both players are aiming for a first quarter-final here at SW19. Take Tsitsipas to earn at least two sets and for at least one tiebreak in the match in what could prove a proper classic on Monday.
