THE PREDICTION

World number four Casper Ruud overcame Sebastian Baez in three sets on Wednesday to get his Hamburg Open campaign underway relatively unscathed. The 24-year-old has finished runner-up at each of the last two French Opens and owns 10 ATP 250 titles but he has yet to win a trophy at this level or higher. A defeat to Andrey Rublev in the Bastad Open final last week is no great embarrassment on paper but the Norwegian was handed a second-set bagel by the Russian to bring some doubt into Hamburg and this is a very difficult next fixture. World number 120 Cristian Garin is a player well capable of breaking back inside the top 20 if he can just find any sort of consistency on tour. The 27-year-old came back from a set down to beat Hugo Dellien on Tuesday to claim his first tour-level win since suffering an injury in the third round of the Italian Open but he had found some strong form on his favoured clay before that. Garin owns five ATP titles on clay, including a 500 title in Rio back in 2020, and he leads Ruud 3-1 in their head-to-head after most recently upsetting him in the third round at Indian Wells back in March. Ruud should be able to find a way through this but the shrewd move could be backing Garin to earn at least a set here, with the suitably cautious concession taking the same option for Ruud.
