THE PREDICTION

World number five Caroline Garcia reached the quarter-finals here in 2017 in her first of now two purple patches on tour. The 29-year-old spent a few years in the wilderness either side of the pandemic but suddenly burst into form last summer, winning a title on each surface before finishing off in style with a first WTA Finals crown at Fort Worth. Garcia won the Women’s Doubles title here last summer alongside Kristina Mladenovic, their second title here after success in 2016, and despite struggling in recent months she should be considered an outside title contender with experience of winning here and the home crowd on her side.

This is a tricky opener against world number 62 Xiyu Wang, though, as the Chinese up-and-comer is well capable of the occasional upset. The 22-year-old is coming off an excellent run to the round of 16 at the Italian Open and she has beaten some tough opponents on clay already in Varvara Gracheva, Bianca Andreescu and Irina-Camelia Begu. The sensible concession is taking Garcia to win outright here whilst we gauge where her level is at.
