THE LOWDOWN

CARLOS ALCARAZ

The meteoric rise of 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz continued apace on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Spaniard will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 15th no matter the outcome of this quarter-final match and he could reach as high as 13th if he wins here and Hubert Hurkacz loses to Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz won the Rio Open last month for a first ATP 500 event, added to his first tour title last season at the ATP 250 Umag Open – both on clay.

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

22-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic will match his career-high ATP world ranking of 38th nest Monday, no matter the outcome of this match, after a brilliant comeback victory over Taylor Fritz. The Serb thoroughly deserves his place in the quarter-final after overcoming four tough opponents this week in Miami, including world number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime in impressive straight sets. Kecmanovic won his only ATP title to date at the Kitzbuhel Open in 2020 on his favoured clay.

THE PREDICTION

This first meeting between Carlos Alcaraz and Miomir Kecmanovic could be repeated a few times more over the clay swing in the kind of form the pair are exhibiting. Every round reached is a new milestone for 18-year-old Alcaraz, who needed Rafael Nadal to oust him from the semi-finals of Indian Wells two weeks ago as he continues a destined rise to the top 10 and beyond. 22-year-old Kecmanovic’s form has come as more of a shock but the Serb has always shown the potential for deep runs like this and two top 10 victories this month, over Auger-Aliassime here and Matteo Berrettini at Indian Wells, suggest he can break the top 30 this Spring. Kecmanovic has a chance here but, realistically, Alcaraz is playing with top four form right now and a potential showdown with Daniil Medvedev awaits in the semis. Back the Spaniard to win outright.
