THE PREDICTION

World number one Carlos Alcaraz overcame an inspired Dan Evans in four thrilling sets on Saturday but he never looked like losing the quality contest. The 20-year-old dropped his first set of his first Grand Slam title defence to show some fragility left over from his choppy August on hardcourts but the Spaniard knows how to come back from scares and fluctuations in form over five sets, doing so twice here last season against Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe. 22-year-old Matteo Arnaldi is through to the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time, on his US Open debut, after upsetting a flat 16th seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets on Saturday. The Italian will break the top 50 on tour for the first time for his efforts no matter the outcome here but it would be a huge surprise to see him take more than a set from a clearly improving Alcaraz. Arnaldi stunned fellow youngster Arthur Fils in five sets in the second round to look a real threat here but he is by far the less experienced here despite being the elder player. Take Alcaraz to win outright, with straight sets about as likely as four if Arnaldi can maintain his level.
