THE LOWDOWN

CARLOS ALCARAZ

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 19th last month after winning his second ATP title and his first ATP 500 event at the Rio Open. The sky is the limit for the Spaniard, with just one defeat so far this season in five sets to Matteo Berettini in the third round of the Australian Open. Alcaraz’s two titles have come on clay but he has the physicality to one day be a world-beater across all surfaces.

MACKENZIE MCDONALD

Californian native Mackenzie McDonald grabbed another impressive win over Marton Fucsovics on Thursday, beating the Hungarian in straight sets via a first-set tiebreak settled at 13-11. 26-year-old McDonald reached the final of the Washington Open last season as he continues to steadily progress up the rankings but he has yet to win back-to-back matches at a Masters tournament.

THE PREDICTION

Mackenzie McDonald will be well-supported here as a sever American underdog but there will be plenty of clamour for the genuine prodigy that is Carlos Alcaraz. The teenager has not yet turned 19 and already he is steadily making his way into the top 20 on tour and it took an excellent Andy Murray to oust him from this tournament back in October. Alcaraz has improved vastly since even then as his level continues to break new ground and he should be able to take this match in straight sets despite a likely spirited fight from McDonald.
