THE PREDICTION

World number one Carlos Alcaraz will enter a Grand Slam as the defending champion for the first time after he beat Casper Ruud in four sets here last summer. The 20-year-old has since eclipsed that achievement with a Wimbledon win for the ages in five sets over four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic but he lost from a set up to the Serb in their incredible rematch in the Cincinnati Open final last week. Alcaraz has doubled his career ATP titles tally to 12 this season and the Spaniard has more wins (53) than any player on tour with just six defeats setting out his stall as the odds-on favourite to win the final next fortnight, with Djokovic looking the overwhelming favourite to face him once again. World number 78 Dominik Koepfer is a player capable of occasional upsets, though, and he will be up for this match like no other after recently coming back into form from a long period in the wilderness.

The German is an honorary American as a former college pro but Alcaraz should receive the lion’s share of the support as a popular new God of tennis amongst mortals. Four sets would not be as surprising as it may look on paper, particularly as Alcaraz’s last seven matches have gone to a decider, so back the Spaniard to win outright here.
