THE LOWDOWN

World number one Carlos Alcaraz has dropped just one set so far in his first ever Grand Slam title defence after an assured victory over former finalist Alexander Zverev on Wednesday. The 20-year-old surpassed his achievements here last summer with an incredible run at Wimbledon, visibly improving on grass with each passing match before stunning four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in a five-set clash for the ages. Alcaraz will drop back down to world number two no matter what he does this week but he is one match away from a likely rematch with Djokovic.

World number three Daniil Medvedev came back from 3-0 down in the first set to friend and compatriot Andrey Rublev to ultimately come through comfortably in straight sets on Wednesday. The 27-year-old won his maiden Grand Slam title here two years ago at the peak of his powers over Novak Djokovic but he found similar form earlier this season to win five more ATP titles before June, including a first on clay at the Rome Masters. Medvedev has reached four Grand Slam finals, with his first ending in five sets to Rafael Nadal here back in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

Daniil Medvedev won his first match against Carlos Alcaraz very comfortably at Wimbledon in 2021 but he has since suffered two equally one-sided defeats to the ever-improving Spaniard, twice this season in fact in the Indian Wells final and the semi-finals at Wimbledon. The Russian is at his best on a hardcourt but the sweltering, frankly dangerous, conditions in New York should add to his discomfort in facing the world number one as Alcaraz has developed a fool-proof method for combatting Medvedev’s deep return position. Medvedev would have to make significant changes to the way he plays to have any real chance of beating the defending champion and he could well do so in more comfortable conditions – indoors for example in Paris or the ATP Finals later this season – but this looks like the Spaniard’s to lose. Back Alcaraz to better enjoy the conditions and the support to come through outright, with three sets about as likely as four.
