THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling watch late on Sunday between two former world number ones in Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev. 19-year-old Alcaraz can return to the top of the world rankings with victory here after reaching the final without dropping a set this fortnight, ousting two top peers in Felix Auger-Aliassime and Jannik Sinner over the last two rounds with some electrifying tennis. World number six Daniil Medvedev overcame Frances Tiafoe in straight sets on Saturday in his bets performance of the week to suggest he has peaked at just the right time to take on Alcaraz, over whom he has a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head after they met at Wimbledon in 2021. Alcaraz is no doubt a totally different prospect two years on but 27-year-old Medvedev is riding a 19-match winning streak into his first Masters final since late 2021 after winning three tournaments on the spin in Rotterdam, Doha and Dubai.

The Russian has an excellent pedigree at this level with four wins from six finals at Masters level but Alcaraz has won both of his ATP 1000 finals and the crowd will be largely on his side in this likely epic. This is a really tough call, which should only aid the drama on Sunday, but this feels very much like an Alcaraz in two, Medvedev in three situation and that makes taking the Spaniard to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable champions the suitably cautious pick. If pushed for a winner, Alcaraz has looked the more at home in California.
