World number two Carlos Alcaraz beat Yannick Hanfmann in his first match back on tour since losing to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the US Open. The 20-year-old struggled to find his very best tennis after the emotional release of winning Wimbledon in a five-set epic for the ages over Novak Djokovic in July but he still managed to reach a Masters final in Cincinnati, where Djokovic gained revenge in another classic. World number nine Casper Ruud came back from a set down to scrape past Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a deciding tiebreak on Sunday, backing-up a more resolute victory over Jan-Lennard Struff. The 24-year-old has endured an odd 2023 season with more troughs than peaks and he needs some more results if he is to qualify for the ATP Finals, where he finished runner-up to Djokovic last November. Alcaraz leads Ruud 3-0 in their head-to-head but the Spaniard is quite possibly a little more vulnerable right now than before. Back Alcaraz to win outright all the same, with three sets a reasonable possibility.
