THE PREDICTION
Group A is very much live on Day 5 with reigning Davis Cup champions Canada in pole position to come through as winners, requiring just one point in this tie against second-placed Chile. Canada are severely underpowered this week in Bologna without Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov, the latter of whom has travelled despite nursing a knee injury suffered at Wimbledon. That has seen Alexis Galarneau, Gabriel Diallo and veteran Vasek Pospisil step into the breach with enormous returns – with Galarneau setting the tone for the week by stunning Lorenzo Sonego in the first tie and Diallo upsetting world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti. After upsetting the hosts, Canada were expected to beat Group A minnows Sweden and they did in relative comfort on Thursday to all-but qualify with a tie to spare.
Chile looked the strongest side in Group A after the first set of ties with a 3-0 victory over Sweden perhaps flattering to deceive. Having to face a wounded host nation in Italy after their whitewashing by Canada looked a tough test but a 0-3 defeat to the hosts came as a huge surprise, particularly world number 22 Nicolas Jarry’s defeat to Lorenzo Sonego. The Italians came back from a set down in all three matches to change the tone of the week in Bologna and suddenly Chile look set to miss out on the finals as Italy look well capable of taking all three points against Sweden.
Former world number 17 Cristian Garin is one of the most frustrating players on tour these days as the 27-year-old is never far from finding his best level but maintaining it for long enough seems beyond him. It will be interesting to see which of Vasek Pospisil or Alexis Galarneau Garin faces as both sides have few options to play with but with Canada already very likely to make the Finals there could be a step-off in motivation. World number 22 Nicolas Jarry will likely face Gabriel Diallo unless Denis Shapovalov has recovered enough to compete but the Chilean should be able to come through either test after a tight defeat under extreme pressure on Friday. The Canadians look well capable in the doubles led by old head Pospisil, who always performs on the international stage. Back Chile to win their singles matches to claim the tie but likely still miss out on the Finals to Italy, with Canada able to take that one point required in the doubles to proceed as Group A winners.
