THE PREDICTION

World number 38 Mayar Sherif won her maiden WTA title on Italian clay late last season at the Emilia-Romagna Open and she looks a dark horse here in Palermo. The 27-year-old recently set a career-best run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on her favoured clay, taking the first from eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka before defeat, but she only just survived an early exit this week with a comeback over up-and-comer Jessica Maneiro. World number 74 Camila Osorio set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd early last season but after a poor 2022 she has been busy working her way back up this year. The 21-year-old came back from a set down to beat Erika Andreeva on Thursday, conceding just two games after being edged out in the opening tiebreak, to look read for a potential thriller in this third tour-level meeting with Sherif. The Egyptian won their most recent match at the Monterrey Open earlier this year but Osorio took their encounter on clay at the Tenerife Open in late 2021. Three sets seem about as likely as two here so back Sherif to earn at least one of them as the just-about likelier of two very capable winners.
