THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Aryna Sabalenka looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Madison Brengle on Thursday, improving on a three-set comeback over French qualifier Chloe Paquet in the first round. The 24-year-old’s big-serve and blistering groundstrokes had gone astray for much of the season but a recent run to the Stuttgart Open final and the semi-finals of the Italian Open are signs of her powers returning. World number 30 Camila Giorgi stunned the Belarusian in three sets at the Eastbourne International last summer, a match that saw the Italian’s own form skyrocket towards a first Masters title won at the Canadian Open. Since then, Giorgi has largely struggled to impose herself anywhere but a three-set win over Shuai Zhang on Tuesday snapped a seven-match losing streak and she looked in much better shape on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over in-form Yulia Putintseva.

This third meeting between the two relies almost solely on Sabalenka’s racket with their head-to-head record finely poised at 1-1. Sabalenka won their first match on clay in straight sets at the 2018 Lugano Open and backing her to win at least one here looks the sensible compromise.
