THE LOWDOWN

CAMERON NORRIE

World number 11 Cam Norrie was solid enough in a straight-sets victory over Soonwoo Kwon for a third win on clay this swing. The 26-year-old was one of last season’s most improved players on tour with steady progress throughout the year culminating in a well-deserved, albeit surprising, run to the Indian Wells title. Norrie won the third ATP title of his career earlier this season at the Delray Beach Open.

JOHN ISNER

World number 23 John Isner overcame a tough clay competitor in Filip Krajinovic on Sunday, coming back from a break down to win in straight sets. The evergreen veteran turned 37 years old last week but he has shown no signs of stopping yet after winning the Men’s Doubles events at Indian Wells and the Miami Open for a ‘Sunshine Double’s Double’. Isner won the 16th ATP title of his career at last season’s Atlanta Open, with his sole Masters title coming at the Miami Open back in 2018.

THE PREDICTION

This should be an intriguing contest between master disruptor Cam Norrie and big-serving John Isner with their head-to-head record finely poised at 2-2. Norrie was the most recent victor in a three-set results at the Mexican Open back in February and the Brit also won their only clay court meeting back at the 2018 Lyon Open in straight sets. However, the high-altitude conditions in Madrid will heavily favour Isner’s near-unstoppable serve and much of this match’s outcome will rest on the American’s rhythm. The last three meetings between these two have seen three sets and there has been at least a tiebreak in each of their four overall. Combining those options looks a valuable one-off here but take at least a tiebreak on its own inside an accumulator.
