THE PREDICTION

Former number six Gael Monfils grabbed one of his most impressive wins since returning form injury last summer, stunning eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz in three tight sets to look set for another deep run on North American hardcourts. The 37-year-old enjoyed a real surge of form on the Masters double across Cincinnati and Toronto last August, upsetting the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur and next opponent Cam Norrie, before picking up his 12th ATP title in Stockholm in October.

World number 28 Norrie overcame a tough opener over Lorenzo Sonego on Saturday but he trails Monfils 0-3 in their head-to-head to suggest the Frenchman has his number, although Norrie’s new-look game for hardcourts that impressed in Melbourne could be more successful here. The Brit brought Alexander Zverev to five sets at the Australian Open before just missing out on the quarter-finals but a sub-standard February makes this a really tricky call – particularly as Norrie won his most prestigious of five ATP titles here three years ago. Monfils has looked in excellent shape in recent weeks so back the Frenchman to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.

TIP: GAEL MONFILS TO WIN A SET
