THE LOWDOWN

World number 12 Cam Norrie started the Australian Open as a clear and present danger to the deeper end of the tournament after beating Alex de Minaur, Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz at the United Cup two weeks ago. The 27-year-old lost a second Auckland final last week, the city where he grew up and reached his first final in 2019, but that only looked to motivate him in a three-set victory over Luca Van Assche on Monday. Norrie changed the course of his career in an incredible breakthrough in 2021 but last year’s run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon, ended in four sets by eventual champion Novak Djokovic, is the best of his life so far.

THE PREDICTION

This is a tough second round clash with 30-year-old Constant Lestienne, though, as the Frenchman continues to enjoy the late blooming of his own career. Lestienne made his Grand Slam debut on Monday at a career-high ATP world ranking of 55th, beating Thiago Monteiro in straight sets to continue a technical four-match winning streak given that he pulled out of the semi-finals of Auckland last week to focus on this campaign. Norrie beat Lestienne in tight three sets at the Marseille Open back in 2021 and the Frenchman will stop at nothing here in what is clearly the biggest match of his career. Back Norrie to edge through outright with four or even five sets well possible.
