THE LOWDOWN

Defending Australian Open champion Aryna Sabaleka made short work of qualifier Ella Seidel on Sunday, blasting past the German in 53 minutes to spare tournament organisers’ blushes from another too-late finish. The 25-year-old came back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina to the title here last season, finally claiming her maiden major title after reaching three semi-finals, but she fell to Coco Gauff by the same margin at the US Open last September to only briefly become world number one before Iga Swiatek wrestled the crown back. The current world number two looked the fierce favourite coming into Melbourne until Rybakina stunned her in the Brisbane final two weeks ago but she remains one of the top contenders alongside the Kazakh, Iga Swiatek and outsider Coco Gauff.

THE PREDICTION

With so many teenage sensations taking tennis by storm in recent months it is hard to make space for 16-year-old Brenda Fruhvirtova’s achievements, with the Czech qualifying for the Australian Open for a second successive season before claiming her maiden Grand Slam victory from a set down to Ana Bogdan on Sunday. Fruhvirtova will break inside the top 100 on tour for the first time for here efforts and she should try to enjoy this biggest day of her impossibly young career against the defending champion, with the Melbourne crowd likely to get fully behind her as the underdog. Back Sabalenka to rise above the noise again to beat another teenager in fewer than 16.5 games.

TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN IN UNDER 16.5 GAMES
