BRANDON NAKASHIMA VS TOMMY PAUL PREDICTION

Brandon Nakashima comes into the Erste Bank open in average form by his standards as he has lost in his opening match in the last two tournaments in Shanghai and Stockholm.

Prior to this poor form, he has had some fantastic wins over some big-name players in the four to six weeks before that including the likes of Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe and his opponent here, Tommy Paul.

That win against Paul came at the Canadian Open as he won 6-2 6-7 6-1. That was the third time that the pair have met on the ATP Tour and Nakashima has won all three meetings.

After some below-par performances by his lofty standards, Tommy Paul got back to winning ways as he won the Stockholm Open on Sunday. He beat Grigor Dimitrov in the final in straight sets and such was his impressive form, he did not drop a single set all week.

The level of competition was solid without being spectacular – Dimitrov, Stan Wawrinka, Miomir Kecmanovic and Laslo Djere – but it was a major step for Paul after a series of disappointments.

Now he has to do something he has only managed on the Challenger Tour and that is beat Nakashima. The 23-year-old just seems to have a little edge over him and any sign of fatigue will only play in the younger man’s favour.

It is worth watching this one, seeing how it develops and analysing what of shape Paul is in. If he is on his game, it will be hard to go against him. But unless he starts well, Nakashima could very well beat him for a fourth time in succession. Our preferred play is on games and we see this going deep.
