THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Botic van de Zandschulp is enjoying his stint as a seeded player at a Grand Slam for the first time so far, beating qualifier Pavel Kotov over four well-contested sets on Sunday. The 26-year-old came to the fore this time last season with a stunning victory over Hubert Hurkacz in five sets before a defeat by the same scoreline to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and since then he has come on leaps and bounds with a run to the US Open quarter-finals and more recently a first tour final reached at the Munich Open. World number 51 Fabio Fognini put in an assured performance to beat Alexei Popyrin in straight sets on Sunday and he too has enjoyed some strong runs on clay this season, reaching the semi-finals of both the Rio Open and Serbia Open before defeats to eventual champions Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev, respectively.

This match has four or five sets written all over it between a tireless Botic van de Zandschulp and firebrand Fabio Fognini, who can always count on a dedicated following on clay and especially at Roland-Garros. The Italian often flatters to deceive, though, and the longer this match continues the better chance Van de Zandschulp has of frustrating his opponent into defeat. This is very much a Fognini, on his day, in three or Van de Zandschulp in four or five situation but the Dutchman is currently the more reliable performer. That makes backing the Dutchman to win at least two sets the sensible option here, leaving the winner up to chance.
