THE LOWDOWN

BOTIC VAN DE ZANDSCHULP

World number 57 Botic van de Zandschulp was in control of his match with Richard Gasquet after dropping the first set but the Frenchman was forced to retire in the third. The 26-year-old has played just six sets so far after beating Jan-Lennard Struff well in the first round, with his form continuing to improve steadily on the tour. The Dutchman produced a stunning run to the US Open quarter-finals last September before coming up against the eventual champion, who he is unfortunate enough to meet again here.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

World number two Daniil Medvedev survived his encounter with Nick Kyrgios and the baying, booing, ‘si-uing’ Melbourne crowds in a four-set victory to reach the third round. The 25-year-old now faces a kind draw through to the quarter-finals before he meets any one of Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Dan Evans or Marin Cilic but he should be safe now until the semi-finals. Last season’s runner-up here also finished runner-up at the US Open in 2019 but he went one better last year with a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic in New York.

THE PREDICTION

Van de Zandschulp’s incredible run to the US Open quarter-finals was ended by eventual champion Daniil Medvedev but the Dutchman snatched the third of a four-set match. He was the only player to do so in New York, although it could be argued that the Russian took his foot off the accelerator at times in their clash and he will be keen to make amends here. The Melbourne crowd may or may not forgive him for calling out their behaviour in his battle with Nick Kyrgios on Thursday but he is almost better-fuelled by hostility than affection. Take him to win in straight sets here, with plenty of time left to make friends with the Australian people before his potential victory here next Sunday.
