25-year-old Borna Gojo won the most important match of his career in impressive straight sets over in-form Mackenzie McDonald to reach the third round of the US Open without dropping a set on his debut. The Croat will break the top 90 on tour for the first time for his efforts after an excellent qualifying campaign but this first encounter with Jiri Vesely is a wide open opportunity for both players and one of the toughest calls of the round. Former world number 35 Vesely has excellent pedigree at this level but the 30 year old has already played 10 sets in New York after overcoming qualifier Enzo Couacaud on Monday and then stunning 20th seed Francisco Cerundolo 10-6 in a deciding tiebreak. The Czech has the edge in these conditions but fatigue surely has to be a factor the longer this match continues. Gojo’s spotless run makes taking him to earn at least a set the suitably cautious way to avoid picking a result here but consider at least a set each outside of an accumulator.
