18-year-old Coco Gauff came into the San Diego Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of eighth after another impressive run at a Grand Slam last month saw her lose to Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals. The teenager looks destined to become the American world number one before her 19th birthday next March if she continues at her current rate, with a first Grand Sam final reached this summer when she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros. This should be a thrilling first encounter with former world number four Bianca Andreescu, who came back from a set down to stun in-form Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday. The 22-year-old has been struggling to regain the momentum that saw her win two Masters titles and the US Open in her breakthrough season back in 2019 but after years of injuries and setbacks she looks capable of climbing her way back to the top.
Both players lost to Garcia at the US Open but Andreescu a few rounds sooner. Gauff’s sustainable excellence should eventually tell in this first encounter and backed by an adoring home crowd she should be able to reach the quarter-finals.
