THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Bernarda Pera comes into Wimbledon at a career-high WTA world ranking of 27th built mostly on her career-changing summer last season, where she won her first two WTA titles back-to-back in Budapest and Hamburg on her favoured clay. Pera reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last month to set her best Grand Slam showing so far but there is plenty in her game that could transcribe well to grass-court tennis with the right draw. World number 99 Viktoriya Tomova brings a five-match losing streak into the first round at Wimbledon, with defeats in all three of her matches on grass so far this season, but the Bulgarian has won her first match at SW19 in each of her two previous appearances. Pera, on the other hand, has lost all four of her previous matches at Wimbledon but she does come in stronger than ever. Back Pera to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors for caution’s sake.
