28-year-old Bernarda Pera beat an out-of-sorts Anett Kontaveit in straight sets on Monday to back-up a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Strasbourg Open last week. The American can move inside the top 30 on tour for the first time with a win here and she was the victor in three very tight sets the last time she faced Donna Vekic at the Abu Dhabi Open in 2021. World number 22 Vekic, however, is enjoying a serious second wind on her career after spending much of the last three seasons in the wilderness. The 26-year-old beat Dayana Yastremska in straight sets on Monday and wins on clay in recent months over the likes of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Liudmila Samsonova suggest she could get close to emulating her career-best run to the quarter-finals here if she edges past Pera. Back Vekic to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance in a match likely to see three sets.
