THE PREDICTION

World number 16 Ben Shelton looks the clear favourite to lift the Auckland Classic title this week as the top seed with very few challengers left. Only world number 35 Arthur Fils looks capable of stopping him in the other semi-final, with second seed Cam Norrie withdrawing with a wrist issue, but he faces a serious banana skin here in the enigmatic Taro Daniel. World number 74 Daniel looks capable of snapping his career-high ATP world ranking of 64th all of a sudden at 30 years old, after finishing last year strongly on the Challenger circuit, with a three-set victory over Alexandre Muller backing-up a strong straight-setter over Max Purcell.

Shelton leads their head-to-head 2-0 but both of their matches have gone the distance, five sets at Wimbledon and three sets in Tokyo where the American picked up his maiden ATP title. Shelton’s serve is potent but not yet totally reliable. The 21-year-old is yet to drop a set this week but back him to make the final outright for caution’s sake.

TIP: BEN SHELTON TO WIN
