THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Ben Shelton grabbed the first top 10 win of his fast-tracking career with an incredible comeback over number four Jannik Sinner on Tuesday, snapping the China Open champion’s seven-match winning streak. Sinner had beaten Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev to claim the title in Beijing last week and whilst his level in Shanghai has been a little reduced nothing should be taken away from the big-game performance Shelton displayed. The 20-year-old has only lost to top 10 talent, Carlos Alcaraz in Toronto, Stefanos Tsitsipas in Cincinnati and Novak Djokovic at the US Open, since the start of the Canada Masters to look the favourite on form here but fellow American Sebastian Korda beat world number three Medvedev on Sunday to suggest this will be a thrilling first encounter.

23-year-old Korda will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 23rd after, perhaps more impressively, backing-up his second win over Medvedev this season with an assured straight-sets win over Francisco Cerundolo on Tuesday but his defeat from a set up to Adrian Mannarino at the Astana Open last week was symptomatic of his fluctuating form this season. The fact that Mannarino is a left-hander, like Shelton, may or may not be a significant factor in this enticing quarter-final but backing Shelton to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor feels like the sensible way to avoid choosing a full side. You could add at least a tiebreak in the match with Korda seeing one in each of his last two and Shelton beating Sinner with a tiebreak decider.
