THE PREDICTION

This looks set to be the match of the day at Indian Wells as home hopeful Ben Shelton takes on red-hot Jannik Sinner for a place in the quarter-finals. 22-year-old Sinner will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of second if he can outperform Carlos Alcaraz this fortnight and his remarkable 17-match winning streak suggests that is well possible – particularly after a vengeful Novak Djokovic crashed out of the draw on Monday. Sinner beat Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open before coming back from two sets down to lift his maiden Grand Slam title, one of six titles (including the Davis Cup) claimed since the start of the hardcourt swing last summer – during which time he has lost to just four players: Dusan Lajovic, Alexander Zverev, Djokovic and Ben Shelton.

World number 16 Shelton came back from a set down to stun the Italian at this stage of the Shanghai Masters last October but Sinner quickly levelled their head-to-head record en-route to the Vienna Open title later that month. Two straight-sets wins so far this campaign suggests Sinner is in no real trouble here but Shelton certainly knows how to use a crowd and he will be backed to the hilt as the USA’s next big thing in Men’s tennis. Back Sinner to win outright, with straight sets only a little likelier than three.

TIP: JANNIK SINNER TO WIN
