World number 16 Ben Shelton came back from a set down to avoid an early exit at the Houston Open but three sets against Zizou Bergs does not bode well for his chances as top seed this week. The 21-year-old reached the semi-finals of the US Open last summer to prove his credentials on hardcourts but he has plenty to learn on this unfamiliar surface and former number 43 Brandon Nakashima will be well aware of his opportunity here. 22-year-old Nakashima is desperately seeking a route back to his former trajectory after a woeful 2023 hampered his excellent 2022. The elder American is through to the quarter-finals without dropping a set and taking him, as the much more comfortable clay-courter, to earn at least one here looks the sensible way to avoid a result.
