THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Belinda Bencic looks set to return to the top 10 on the WTA tour after her run to the Adelaide final was aided by Veronika Kudermetova withdrawing from their semi-final. The Swiss ended last season in high spirits with victory at the Billie Jean King Cup for Switzerland and she played well at the United Cup despite losing out to Iga Swiatek’s Poland in the group stages. Her most eye-catching result of the week is knocking out WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia in three sets on Thursday, whist world number eight Daria Kasatkina enjoyed her own stand-out result in a straight-sets victory over in-form Petra Kvitova. The Russian, also 25, also received a walkover to the final as Paula Badosa dropped out of Adelaide 2 and that should see both players rested with little advantage for either. All five of their previous meetings have been settled in straight sets, with Kasatkina leading 3-2 in their head-to-head record after claiming their most recent encounter at Roland-Garros in 2021.

Bencic, though, beat Kasatkina here in Adelaide three years ago and her victory over Garcia sets out her stall as the slightest of favourites in what should be a thrilling final. Back the Swiss to earn at least a set or risk a tough outright call.
