THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia shocked Maria Sakkari for the second time this season, ousting the top seed in three sets on Friday to blow the Nottingham Open draw wide open. The Brazilian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 42nd no matter the outcome of this first tour-level meeting with Tereza Martincova but she looks a reasonable favourite to come through this semi-final after her exploits. World number 60 Martincova has bettered her showing here from last season by reaching the semi-finals in Nottingham, taking out Shuai Zhang in comfortable straight sets to reach this stage without dropping a set. The Czech is probably the more assured on grass given her solid swing last season but Haddad-Maia looks the player to beat on this side of the draw and backing the Brazilian to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors seems wise with three sets likely.
