THE LOWDOWN

BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA

World number 61 Beatriz Haddad-Maia found some strong form last week at the Monterrey Open with a great run to the semi-finals before losing in straight sets to eventual champion Leylah Fernandez. The 25-year-old shocked the Indian Wells top seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets last October to reach the round of 16. Haddad-Maia has found great success on the doubles tour so far this season, winning at the Sydney International before finishing runner-up at the Australian Open alongside Anna Danilina.

SOFIA KENIN

World number 130 Sofia Kenin won the first two matches of her 2022 season in Adelaide but she has since lost four matches on the spin leading up to Indian Wells. The 2020 Australian Open champion has suffered with form, fitness and the loss of her father over the last few seasons but it should only be a matter of time before she returns to the top 20 of the sport. Kenin is a former world number four with a total of five WTA titles to her name at just 23 years old.

THE PREDICTION

This is a difficult match to call between Beatriz Haddad-Maia’s form and Sofia Kenin’s ability. The American should be blasting through this match in straight sets but we have yet to even flashes of what she I capable of since 2020, with the wildcard desperately needing more matches under her belt. Haddad-Maia claimed the win of her career against top seed Karolina Pliskova here back in October and backing her to win outright is not the upset it appears based on names alone. Taking the Brazilian to win at least a set as the likelier to come through is the sensible move.
