THE LOWDOWN
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
- Daniil Medvedev’s rise to the top of the game has seen him reach world number four after winning the same amount of games this year that world number three Roger Federer has played (at the time of writing), with a 2019 record of 59-18.
- There is little doubt that Medvedev will be the one to beat in his debut at the ATP Finals if he carries on his imposing hard-court form but he will have to beat Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career at some point should he wish to progress from Group A to the final.
- Medvedev holds a 100% win percentage over his first opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas in five previous encounters, including four wins on hard courts, all of which have come within the last two years dating back to the Miami Masters in March 2018.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
- Stefanos Tsitsipas moved up to sixth in the ATP world rankings this week, within one place of his career-high 5th achieved back in August, after reaching the Paris Masters quarter-final stage last week.
- The 21-year-old Greek was completely outplayed by Novak Djokovic in that quarter-final and his two titles this year at ATP 250 events - the Estoril Open and Open 13 in Marseille - does pale in comparison with the players ranked above him.
- Tsitsipas was desperate to qualify for what will be his debut campaign at the ATP Finals this Monday, and since he was confirmed entry he has both beaten and lost to Novak Djokovic as well as lost to Roger Federer and his opponent here Daniil Medvedev.
THE PREDICTION
The battle of the next gen stars will be a fierce one indeed between the sensational Daniil Medvedev and the unpredictable Stefanos Tsitsipas. Medvedev has laid out his stall for a potential Grand Slam win in 2020 and if he continues in the same rich vein he has been playing since the beginning of the hard court season, he has every chance of bettering his US Open runners-up medal. Before all that, though, he must knuckle down after what has been a relative rest period for him, having lost in the second round of the Paris Masters last week, and beat Tsitsipas for a sixth time. The Greek will have plenty to offer in this match but it is no secret that he struggles against the Russian more than he does the top three, and while he should lose this first match, he will be eager to test Rafael Nadal’s nerve later this week.
