THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Aslan Karatsev set a career-high ATP world ranking of 14th just over a year ago but the Russian’s form has dropped off a cliff since then to see him have to qualify as world number 121 this week. Karatsev qualified well, though, stunning in-form Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to make the main draw without dropping a set and it would be foolish to trust that his current ranking belies his ability. World number 70 Laslo Djere is also capable of better tennis than his ranking suggests, particularly on his favoured clay, and he upset Borna Coric in three sets last week in Banja Luka to prove it. Three of Djere’s last four matches on clay have gone to three sets and taking this first encounter on tour with Karatsev to do the same is tempting. Otherwise, back the Serb to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
