THE PREDICTION

World number three Daniil Medvedev had to come back from a set down against his friend and compatriot Alexander Shevchenko on Monday in a much tighter match than was expected. The 27-year-old has made his feelings about clay tennis quite clear over the past few years but the high altitude in Madrid takes some of the sting out of it for the more hardcourt-focused players on tour, as Alexander Zverev’s two title here can attest to. Medvedev will now face another Russian in Aslan Karatsev after the former world number 14 upset Alex de Minaur in three sets on Monday. The current world number 121 has been in woeful form for over 12 months now but there are encouraging signs of a resurgence this fortnight after coming through qualifying to drop just that one set so far. At his peak, Karatsev beat Medvedev in straight sets on clay at the Rome Masters two years ago but Medvedev levelled things in three sets at Mallorca on grass last summer. Karatsev has won at least a set in both of their previous meetings, so taking that option looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner with Medvedev likelier to edge through at the close.
