THE LOWDOWN

World number five Aryna Sabalenka claimed the 11th WTA title of her career, and first since early 2021, with a very solid week at Adelaide 1 including straight-set wins over Liudmila Samsonova, Marketa Vondrousova and rising star Linda Noskova in the final. After a season to forget in 2022 the Belarussian actually finished last year in style, reaching the semi-finals of the US Open for the second year in a row and then finishing runner-up to Caroline Garcia at the WTA Finals. Sabalenka also made the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2021 but she has yet to make it past the round of 16 in Melbourne.

THE PREDICTION

This looks a fairly straight-forward opener for Sabalenka as she faces world number 73 Tereza Martincova for the first time on tour. 28-year-old Martincova stunned both Jil Teichmann and Anett Kontaveit on home soil at the Ostrava Open last October but she is riding a four-match losing streak since her quarter-final exit there. The Czech has lost two matches she should have won this season and Sabalenka should have little trouble blasting through in straight sets.
