THE LOWDOWN

ARYNA SABALENKA

World number eight Aryna Sabalenka conceded just two games in a thumping win over Shuai Zhang on Wednesday for a statement to the rest of the draw. The 24-year-old recently finished runner-up at the Stuttgart Open to Iga Swiatek after seriously impressive victories over Bianca Andreescu, Anett Kontaveit and Paula Badosa. Former world number two Sabalenka is a three-time Masters champion with her most recent coming at last season’s Madrid Open.

JESSICA PEGULA

28-year-old Jessica Pegula will break the top 10 for a first time if she reaches the quarter-final after receiving a walkover to the round of 16. The current world number 11 came back from a set down to beat Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday and the break should suit her well after a gruelling run to the final of the Madrid Open last weekend, where she lost to Ons Jabeur in three sets. Pegula also reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open last month before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

THE PREDICTION

It is still really tough to decide how close to her best working level Aryna Sabalenka actually is after a performance like Wednesday’s but this clash with in-form Jessica Pegula should give more answers. The Belarussian leads Pegula 2-1 in their head-to-head record after most recently beating the American at this stage of last season’s Madrid Open on her way to the title and she has won both of their meetings on clay. Pegula has the more demonstrable form behind her and a useful rest after Anhelina Kalinina pulled out of their second round match but backing former world number two Sabalenka to find at least a set from somewhere looks the right call here.
