THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Francisco Cerundolo enjoyed an incredible breakthrough season on tour in 2022, setting a career-high ATP world ranking of 24th in July after winning his maiden ATP title at the Bastad Open on clay. However, the Argentine is not to be pigeon-holed as a stereotypical clay specialist after he burst onto the scene at the Miami Open last season with a stunning run to the semi-finals before Casper Ruud got the better of him. Still, world number 44 Arthur Rinderknech is perhaps the more comfortable of the two in these conditions in Perth after reaching his first ATP tour final in Adelaide last January where he lost in the tightest of margins to Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Frenchman suffered a fairly poor summer by his recent standards but he came back into form on the later hardcourt swing with runs to the quarter-finals at four-successive tournaments from Metz to Basel, beating the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Marin Cilic and Pablo Carreno Busta. Cerundolo, in contrast, lost three of his last 13 matches on tour in a severe climbdown after the summer and that suggests backing Rinderknech to edge this first encounter could be the smart move.
