THE PREDICTION

18-year-old Arthur Fils will break the top 100 on tour for the first time without picking up a racket on Thursday as Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew from Lyon ahead of Roland-Garros later this week. Fils beat Zhizhen Zhang in straight sets and then took the first set from Mikael Ymer on Wednesday before the Swede was disqualified for assaulting the umpire’s chair, meaning the young Frenchman is through to a third-successive semi-final on French soil having played just three sets. World number 52 Brandon Nakashima has played more than twice that to make the last four but he will be ecstatic to have finally strung three wins together after a poor start to 2023. The 21-year-old ended last season on a high as the Next Gen ATP Finals champion but his season looked drab until a straight-sets victory over third seed Tommy Paul on Thursday and he looks ready to improve on tour now just in time for Roland-Garros.

A first meeting between the two should go the American’s way but Fils has had an extra day’s rest and he can count on raucous partisan support here in Lyon. Leave this match out of an accumulator but consider backing Fils to earn at least a set even if he ends up losing.
