THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Elena Rybakina comes into the Madrid Masters at a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh after recently winning her first Masters title at Indian Wells and she is already up to sixth in the live rankings. The Kazakh won her maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last season and finished runner-up at the Australian Open back in January but she first really burst onto the scene with a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2021 when she stunned Serena Williams in the round of 16. World number 62 Anna Kalinskaya only recently lost to Rybakina but she impressed in a three-set defeat at this stage of the Miami Open, where Rybakina went on to finish runner-up. 24-year-old Kalinskaya enjoyed a brilliant run to the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open earlier this month before an injury saw her concede to eventual champion Ons Jabeur and she would have been given a solid chance at most players in this draw. Rybakina, however, is simply becoming one of the most dependable players around and the high altitude in Madrid should add an extra few percent on her deceptively powerful groundstrokes. Back the Kazakh to win this rematch outright, probably in two.
