THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Sofia Kenin grabbed the most impressive result of her past three seasons on Thursday with a remarkable straight-sets victory over Madrid Open champion Aryna Sabalenka. Whilst it was admittedly an off day for the likely exhausted world number two it is hard to quantify just how important this win could be for 24-year-old Kenin, who has been desperately seeking crumbs of confidence on tour ever since the pandemic interrupted her career-best season in 2020. World number 47 Anhelina Kalinina beat Anna Blinkova in straight sets on Thursday to avoid an early banana skin but facing Kenin just got a whole lot more difficult than it would have been two days ago. Kenin now owns an improving 11-10 record for 2023 so far and two of those wins have come over Kalinina at the Hobart International and Miami Open. The Ukrainian has beaten Kenin twice off of the tour but this looks a steeper challenge. The suitably cautious move remains taking Kenin to win at least a set here as we monitor how she reacts.
