THE LOWDOWN

Former world number one Andy Murray won his three Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 but he has played more than half of his major finals here in Melbourne. The 37-year-old finished runner-up to Roger Federer in 2010 and then Novak Djokovic four times in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016 as the “Big Three’s” most consistent challenger over the past two decades but he has failed to make it past the round of 16 since, succumbing to nearly career-ending injuries after his near-untouchable 2016. Murray found some encouraging form at the beginning of last season, reunited with coach Ivan Lendl, but that soon dissipated after an unfortunate curfew at Wimbledon saw him lose to Stefanos Tsitsipas from two sets up. The Brit made headlines here last year with two electrifying five-set thrillers over Matteo Berrettini and Thanasi Kokkinakis that left him with nothing to face Roberto Bautista Agut in the third – sparking a debate over tennis’ timing issues.

THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Tomas Martin Etcheverry brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 30th into the Australian Open after enjoying an incredible run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros on his favoured clay. The Argentine proved himself a solid competitor on hardcourts too, though, with Murray winning their first clash in tight three sets at Indian Wells before Etcheverry returned the favour in similar fashion at the Swiss Indoors back in October. Etcheverry has lost both of his matches in three sets so far this season whilst Murray took the first from eventual Brisbane champion Grigor Dimitrov before defeat in his first of 2024. History in this fixture, and Murray’s campaign here last season, suggests that this match is a clear five-set candidate in a one-off whilst the sensible call is taking both players to win a set.

TIP: BOTH PLAYERS TO WIN A SET
