THE PREDICTION

Former world number one and two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray conceded just four games to fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in one of his most efficient wins at SW19. The 36-year-old brought fitness and relative form into the tournament for the first time since 2017, where a quarter-final defeat as the defending champion to Sam Querrey signalled the start of his almost career-ending battle to save and then resurface his hip. Murray maintained his record of never losing in the first round at Wimbledon but the current world number 40 faces a huge challenge here against world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas, who played well to overcome Dominic Thiem in five fierce sets played over two days due to severe rain delays. 24-year-old Tsitsipas has twice finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Grand Slams, Roland-Garros in 2021 and the Australian Open in January, but Wimbledon remains his blind spot having never made it past the round of 16.

The Greek has improved on grass over the last two years but if Murray can maintain his level from the first round the Brit, backed by a partisan crowd on Centre Court, genuinely looks to be the favourite here, not least because Tsitsipas will have to recover from a five set match as well as the stress caused by delayed play. Murray beat Tsitsipas in their previous meeting on grass in Stuttgart last summer, en-route to the final there, and he took the Greek to five sets in that infamous US Open battle two years ago before eventually losing out. That makes taking Murray to earn at least two sets, as he has in both previous meetings, the sensible option here and you can add at least a tiebreak in the match for good measure with one in each of their matches played so far.
