Former world number one Andy Murray and former number six Matteo Berrettini meet here in Miami for the first time since their memorable five-set epic at the Australian Open last season, where Murray edged through in the early hours of the morning. Both players have endured more than their fair share of injuries and fitness setbacks in recent seasons but 27-year-old Berrettini’s current plight, at almost a decade younger than his veteran opponent, remains especially concerning. The Italian leads their head-to-head 3-2 as things stand but each of their last three meetings have come incredibly close, including in the Stuttgart Open final two years ago.
Berrettini finished runner-up to Nuno Borges at the Phoenix Challenger to tentatively suggest he may be ready to return to the tour from his latest injury absence but Murray’s poor 2024 form has been improving in recent weeks, winning in the first round at each of his last three tournaments. Berrettini has won at least a set in each of their last four meetings to offer a suitable way to avoid a result from this fascinating, yet slightly fraught, clash on Wednesday.
