THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Andy Murray laboured to a three-set victory over an impressive Max Purcell on Thursday but the scrappy win should do his confidence some good. The 36-year-old will move back inside the top 40 for his efforts as he aims to reach the seeds in time for a tilt at the US Open, where he won his first Grand Slam title in 2012, and one more win will take him close to doing so with only Alejandro Davidovich Fokina still active in that section of the live rankings. World number eight Jannik Sinner has to be the favourite here after passing a significant test against his friend and compatriot Matteo Berrettini on Wednesday, ousting the recovering former number six in straight sets. The 21-year-old recently reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon but did so without playing anyone inside the top 70 to leave his overall form in question but Sinner looks ready for a competitive hardcourt swing.

The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record with Sinner taking their most recent match in Dubai last year. If Murray plays like he did against Purcell, Sinner should come through the winner here but expect an improved performance from both. Take Sinner to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
