THE PREDICTION
This could be an enthralling, nostalgic match second round clash between old foes Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov, their first since Murray beat the Bulgarian to win the Beijing Open in 2016. Former world number one Murray leads Dimitrov 8-3 in their storied head-to-head but Dimitrov boasts their most famous result when he knocked the defending champion out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals in straight sets in 2014. Murray overcame wind-up merchant Corentin Moutet in straight sets on Tuesday to get a strong foothold in at the US Open, where he won his first of three Grand Slam titles in 2012, whilst former world number three Dimitrov came back from two sets down to win for the first time in his long career in an unexpectedly close encounter with Alex Molcan. A win like that could spur the current world number 19 on and he has the added advantage of playing under Murray’s former coach Jamie Delgado but the New York crowd will likely do their part in favour of former champion Murray. Sets look likely to go both ways so back Murray, who leads 7-2 on hardcourts, to earn at least two of them.
