THE LOWDOWN

ANDREY RUBLEV

World number seven Andrey Rublev is riding a 12-match winning streak after beating Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets on Wednesday. The 24-year-old won back-to-back titles in February at the Open 13 in Marseille and the ATP 500 level Dubai Tennis Championships to take his career total up to 10. Rublev finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open last August, his best showing so far at Masters level.

GRIGOR DIMITROV

Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov is yet to drop a set at Indian Wells after an impressive victory over John Isner came via a second-set tiebreak. The 30-year-old won the Cincinnati Open in 2017 for his only Masters titles to date, the same season he went on to win his crowning achievement at the ATP Finals. Dimitrov found his best level at this tournament last October, beating Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz in style before losing to eventual champion Cam Norrie.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper thriller on Friday between Andrey Rublev on a 12-match winning streak and Grigor Dimitrov playing with the shackles off once again at Indian Wells. The Bulgarian has the higher ceiling for the tennis he can produce but he has been unable to find that level consistently for so long and that could be his undoing here against one of the most consistent players on tour in Rublev. When the Russian finds form like this he can go on several title-winning streaks a season but he can often be pegged back before doubling down. The pair share a head-to-head record of two wins apiece to leave this neatly poised but they have not met since Rublev won in straight sets at the 2019 Beijing Open. The sensible pick here is for Rublev to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners but this one has coupon-buster written all over it if Dimitrov turns up.
