THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Diego Schwartzman has suffered a few earlier exits at recent clay-court tournaments than he would like, with a second round exit to Marcos Giron at the Italian open last time out particularly poor. The 29-year-old is at his best on the surface and he is a popular player with crowds at prestigious events with a notoriety for entertaining matches. His best run was a stunning 2020 campaign in 2020 ended by eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals but he has also finished twice in quarter-finals including last season, where he took a set off Nadal in another defeat.
The Argentine will be confident of a comfortable enough opener against world number 227 Andrey Kuznetsov despite the fact that the Russian won their only previous meeting back in 2017 at the Bastad Open. 31-year-old Kuznetsov qualified well this week but the former world number 39 spends much of his time on the Challenger circuit these days.
